Split System Air Conditioning Installation Cost Guide 2026

If you’re researching a split system installation cost, you’ve probably already noticed that prices vary a lot depending on who you ask and where you look.
We want to make it easy to budget, so here’s the short version:
Depending on the size of the unit and the space you need it for, the cost to install a split system will sit anywhere between $2,200 and $4,700, including GST.
This guide breaks down how much you can actually expect to pay to install a split system (per unit size) in Queensland in 2026, based on our own supply and install pricing here at TSR. No vague ranges, no bait-and-switch figures. Just honest, transparent pricing so you can plan your purchase with confidence.
What’s included in a supply and install price?
Before we get into the numbers, it’s worth understanding what “supply and install” actually covers, because not every quote includes the same things.
At TSR, our supply and install price includes the unit itself, all standard installation materials (refrigerant pipe, electrical cable, wall bracket, drain line), the labour to install it, and commissioning and testing before we leave the job. What it doesn’t include is any non-standard electrical work, additional pipe runs beyond a standard installation, or any structural modifications your property might need.
All of our technicians are licensed through the Australian Refrigeration Council, so you can be confident our work is carried out to the required standard. Plus, we’ll always tell you upfront if your job has anything that would add to the standard price, so there are no surprises on the day.

Split system supply and install costs by size in 2026
All split systems that we supply and install are reverse cycle, meaning they provide both cooling in summer and heating in winter, making them the perfect addition to your home all year round. The split system price table below reflects the supply and installation of a reverse cycle split system by capacity:
| System size | Typical space | TSR supply and install cost (inc GST) |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5kW | Small bedroom | $2,200 |
| 3.5kW | Bedroom or small living area | $2,300 |
| 5kW | Main living area | $2,900 |
| 7.1kW | Large open plan living | $3,300 |
| 8kW | Very large living area | $3,900 |
| 9.5kW | Extra-large or commercial space | $4,700 |
For commercial properties, the supply and install pricing is generally similar to that of residential for a comparable system size, though there may be additional installation constraints that we can explore with you during our quoting process.

What size split system do I need?
Choosing the right size system is just as important as the price. An undersized unit will run constantly and never quite cool the room, while an oversized one will short-cycle and cost more to run than it should.
Here’s a rough guide on unit size per room size to get you started:
- 2.5kW units suit a small bedroom up to around 20m²
- 3.5kW units suit a standard bedroom or small living area up to around 30m²
- 5kW units suit a main living area up to around 40–50m²
- 7.1kW units suit a large open plan living and dining area up to around 60m²
- 8kW units suit a very large living space or a small commercial room up to around 70m²
- 9.5kW units suit an extra-large living space or small commercial application up to around 80m²+
These are general guidelines. The right size for your space also depends on ceiling height, insulation, window area, orientation, and how the room is used, so we always carry out a proper assessment before recommending a system.

What affects the cost of a split system installation?
The split system installation cost figures above are based on a standard installation. Here are the main factors that can affect the final cost of your job:
Standard vs complex installation
A standard installation, where the indoor and outdoor units are positioned close together with a short, straight pipe run through a single wall, is the most straightforward job and attracts the lowest labour cost. Most bedrooms and straightforward living areas fall into this category.
A complex installation involves longer pipe runs, multiple bends, installation through brick or double brick walls, running pipes through ceiling cavities, or positioning the outdoor unit in a difficult location. These jobs take longer and require more materials, which adds to the overall cost. If your job involves any of these, we’ll identify it during our site assessment and factor it into your quote.
Wall and construction type
The type of wall your property has affects how the installation is done and how long it takes. Weatherboard and timber frame walls are generally straightforward. Brick veneer adds some complexity. Double brick or rendered walls require core drilling and take longer, which adds to labour cost. Queenslander-style homes with elevated floors and exposed subfloors often involve longer pipe runs and additional access considerations.
Electrical work
A standard split system installation assumes there is a suitable circuit available near the installation location. If your home needs a new dedicated circuit run from the switchboard, or if the switchboard itself needs upgrading, this is additional electrical work that will be quoted separately. We’ll flag this during the site assessment so you’re not caught off guard.
Multi-storey properties
Installing a split system in a two-storey home or a unit in a multi-storey building often involves longer pipe runs, more complex routing, and sometimes additional access equipment. This adds to the installation cost and will be reflected in your quote.
Location and access
For properties beyond our standard service area, a travel component may be included in the quote. We happily service Gympie, the Wide Bay region, and the South Burnett region, however if you’re further afield and need our help, simply give us a call, and we’ll let you know what’s involved.

What about ducted air conditioning?
If you’re considering ducted air conditioning rather than a split system, typically for whole-home climate control, the cost is significantly higher. TSR ducted system installations range from $14,000 to $25,000 supply and installed, depending on the size of the home, the number of zones, and the complexity of the installation.
For more details on ducted costs and whether a ducted system is right for your home, read our guide to ducted air conditioning cost and efficiency.
Which brands does TSR install?
TSR is an authorised installer and warranty agent for Daikin, Panasonic, and Actron Air. We repair all brands, but for new split system installations, we supply and install only these three brands. This is because being an authorised agent means your installation is backed by full manufacturer warranty support, not just our word for it.
All three brands offer a strong range of reverse cycle split systems across the full capacity range above, with models well suited to Queensland’s climate, including options with enhanced performance in high humidity and coastal conditions.
We’ll recommend the right model for your space, budget, and usage during your free quote. And if you’re wondering what that looks like in practice:

When is it worth replacing rather than repairing?
If your existing split system is giving you trouble, here’s a simple way to think about whether a repair or replacement makes more sense:
- If the system is under 8 years old and the repair cost is reasonable, repair is usually the right call
- If the system is 10 years or older and facing a significant repair, replacement is often better value, plus you’ll get a more energy-efficient system and a fresh warranty
- If the split system air conditioner repair cost is approaching or exceeding the cost of a new entry-level system, that money is often better invested in a new installation
- If the system has had multiple repairs in the last few years, it’s likely telling you it’s nearing the end of its reliable life
Not sure which way to go? Give us a call, and we’ll give you an honest assessment. We’d rather help you make the right decision than push you toward a replacement you don’t need.
Getting a quote for your split system installation
The cost to install a split system varies by property, which is why we always recommend a site assessment before confirming the final price. What looks like a straightforward job can have complexities that only become clear on site, and we’d rather identify those upfront than surprise you down the track.
Our quotes are detailed, written, and include everything you need to make an informed decision, including our system size recommendation, the supply and install cost, and any additional work (if required). Get a free quote from TSR or simply call us on (07) 5482 8100, and we’ll make sure you’re set up for all-year comfort.
Disclaimer: The split AC installation costs listed in this article are inclusive of GST and based on a standard installation. Additional costs may apply for complex installations. Pricing is based on TSR’s own supply and install rates, current as of April 2026, which may change at TSR’s discretion.
