One Mile State School Gympie

TSR recently completed an air conditioning upgrade at One Mile State School in Gympie, delivered for QBuild and installed to Department of Education specification. The job was carried out as part of the Air-conditioning Repair and Replacement Program (ACRRP), a QBuild initiative that funds upgrades, repairs and new installs of climate control infrastructure across Queensland’s public buildings and schools. It’s the kind of job our team does quietly and well, but it’s worth telling the story of what goes into getting a classroom cooling upgrade right on a government-spec job.

What the upgrade involved

The brief was straightforward on paper: get a new unit in, get it right, get it done over the holiday period before the term started again. This was no problem for the TSR team.

We installed a 12.5kW under-ceiling unit, sized to properly cool the space it was servicing because we understood just how hard an aircon needs to work in school conditions. Undersized units in classrooms struggle to keep up on a hot Gympie afternoon, while oversized units cycle on and off too often. This means that getting that capacity right from the start matters just as much on a school job as it does on any commercial fitout, if not more so.

Because the job was scheduled for the school holidays, the whole install had to happen while the school was empty, with zero disruption to term-time learning. Why flood height mattered for this install

Gympie has a flood history most Queensland towns don’t have to plan around. The Mary River has produced some of the largest flood peaks on record in the state, with the 2022 event reaching close to 23 metres and ranking as the second-highest flood on record in Gympie, behind the flood of 1893, which peaked at 25.45 metres.

That history shapes how TSR approaches any install in the Gympie area, and this job was no exception. The under-ceiling unit was installed high and clear of flood height, protecting the equipment and the school’s investment if the Mary River rises again.

It’s a small detail that doesn’t show up in a spec sheet, but it’s exactly the kind of local knowledge that separates a contractor who’s worked Gympie for decades from one who’s just passing through.

Working to Department of Education and QBuild standards

Government-spec jobs come with a different level of scrutiny than a standard residential or small commercial install.
