TSR Delivers Precision Climate Control for Genesis Care Radiation Bunkers

When Genesis Care needed two pre-conditioners installed into live radiation bunkers at their Fraser Coast cancer care clinic, they needed a team that understood how important the job was for clinical precision, patient safety, and minimal disruption to patient care.

TSR was engaged to supply and install two pre-conditioner units into the live bunkers, working around an active treatment schedule. As part of the project, we needed to ensure patients experienced no disruptions to their care, and we delivered. With work planned around the treatment schedule, coordinated night works, and thorough system testing, both systems were installed and operational without a single treatment being interrupted.

The project: precision climate control for a critical clinical environment

Genesis Care is one of Australia’s leading cancer care providers, delivering radiation therapy to patients across the country. At their Fraser Coast clinic, two radiation bunkers required new pre-conditioning units to maintain the stable temperature and humidity levels that clinical equipment and patient care demands.

Radiation bunkers are among the most technically demanding environments for HVAC work. The linear accelerators used in radiation therapy, which are the machines that deliver precisely targeted radiation doses to cancer patients, are sensitive instruments that require very stable environmental conditions to perform accurately. So we treated every stage of this installation with the same level of precision that the equipment (and the patients depending on it) deserved.

What the installation involved

The project required careful timing and close coordination with the Genesis Care clinical team to work around active treatment schedules. The entire project was completed in four days, with zero impact on Genesis Care’s daily treatment schedule.

TSR managed the full supply, installation, and commissioning of both units – an Airchange PMA200 and an Airchange SCA30 – including:

Active bunker management: Both bunkers remained in clinical use throughout the project. Every stage of the installation was planned around Genesis Care’s treatment timetable, so the rooms were always available when patients needed them.

Night works: The bulk of the physical installation was carried out after hours, keeping days clear for patient treatments. That put real pressure on the team to work efficiently, accurately, and to a high standard after dark, and they delivered.

Thorough system testing: Both systems were tested and verified in consultation with the Genesis Care team to confirm they were performing to the required clinical standard before the bunkers returned to full use.

Clean handover: Both units were fully operational and signed off before treatments resumed the following morning. No delays, no disruptions, and no shortcuts.

Why it’s important: what precise climate control means in a radiation bunker

Most commercial air conditioning jobs are measured by comfort and cost. This one was measured by clinical accuracy and patient welfare, and that changed everything about how we approached the work on this project.

Getting the climate wrong in a radiation bunker is a clinical problem. The linear accelerators used in radiation therapy need to operate within very specific environmental conditions to deliver accurate, consistent treatment, and standard air conditioning simply can’t deliver that level of control.

The pre-conditioners we installed were purpose-built for exactly this kind of environment. They hold conditions within a much narrower band, keeping the space stable, dry, and within the parameters that both the equipment and the patients depend on – and for a cancer care clinic like Genesis Care, that precision is everything.

Managing a complex live site

With patient treatments continuing throughout the project and needing to meet clinical standards at every stage, timing and coordination were critical. TSR worked closely with the Genesis Care team to:

  • Plan all installation work around the daily treatment schedule
  • Carry out the majority of physical work after hours to protect daytime operations
  • Test and verify both systems to clinical standard before handover
  • Ensure the bunkers were ready for use each morning without exception

Cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy are often in the middle of a multi-week treatment course. Rescheduling isn’t simple, and disruptions have real consequences for real people. Our team, which was made up of Nathan, Wilson, Vincent, Harry, and the wider crew drawn from our Gympie and Fraser Coast branches, structured the entire installation around that reality, arriving after the last patient of the day and completing each stage to a point where the bunkers could be safely returned to service the following morning. That kind of care comes from experience, good planning, and a genuine understanding of what’s at stake.

Client feedback

The feedback from CBRE, who managed the project on behalf of Genesis Care as the building manager, was incredibly positive and reflected the hard work that the team put into the job. It was the kind of response that comes from a team that genuinely cares about getting it right.

The TSR approach to commercial projects

Projects like Genesis Care show why healthcare providers, councils, and commercial operators across the Wide Bay and South Burnett regions trust TSR with their most demanding work.

We deliver end-to-end commercial air conditioning services, from system selection and load assessment through to installation, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance. Our technicians are fully qualified, locally based, and experienced in critical and live-site environments where precision and reliability are non-negotiable.

For Genesis Care, this meant a project delivered on time, to clinical standard, and without a single treatment disrupted. That’s the result we’re proud of.

Future-proofing a critical healthcare facility

This installation was an investment in the long-term reliability of a facility that cancer patients depend on every day.

Modern pre-conditioners designed for clinical environments are built to maintain precise conditions consistently over time, reducing the risk of equipment drift, unexpected failures, and the disruption that comes with them. The systems we installed at Genesis Care are designed to protect both the clinical equipment and the patient experience well into the future, and with the right maintenance behind them, they’ll continue to perform to the standard that this kind of environment demands.

Ongoing support after installation

Once installed, ongoing maintenance is what keeps a precision system like this performing to the standard a clinical environment needs. TSR provides scheduled maintenance programs that can be tailored to healthcare and critical facility environments, helping prevent breakdowns, maintain efficiency, and ensure the system continues to operate within the tight parameters that radiation therapy demands.

With 24/7 service support available, facilities like Genesis Care can rely on a fast response when something needs attention, because in a clinical environment, waiting isn’t an option.
